Sabroso Offers Fresh Cuban Bread, Outdoor Dining

The restaurant opened in October.

It's part bakery, part diners dream.

Sabroso Cuban Restaurant, 5214 N. Nebraska Avenue, offers favorites like empanadas, fried plantains and guava and cheese turnovers.

Fresh cuban bread is made daily in a bakery attached to the restaurant, and an upstairs banquet room is used for overflow dining or special events. Carry out is also available.

Spanish paella will be added to the menu soon, and a full Thanksgiving dinner is available for guests to order, said manager Arno Sinram.

Owners Anita and Louis Capdevila - who also own La Teresita on what some call "Boliche Boulevard" in west Tampa - opened Sabroso in October. The couple live in Dade City, but Anita has Seminole Heights roots.

"I grew up in this neighborhood," she said, "so I'm back."

We recently talked to Anita Capdevila about opening the restaurant, located block south of Hillsborough Avenue, and getting the word out about Sabroso.

On what made her want to open the restaurant: "It started out primarily to be a bakery for bread, about a year ago. We make bread for La Teresita. We had a little coffee shop originally, and a small restaurant. When people found out we would be in the area, they asked us to expand and become a restaurant."

Specialities offered at Sabroso: "We have flanked steak, roast pork, lamb, oxtail."

On what makes their restaurant differ from others: "The Latin food sets us apart. Probably the good price and the quantity of the food they get for the price."

The hardest part of running a restaurant: "The location was closed for two years, so people don’t know we're here yet. The ones who do know think it's fantastic, and bring their friends and family. That’s the biggest challenge right now - for people to know we're here."

!Gracias a Dios! (Thank God!) Me and my husband had lunch from there and to say it was delicious is an UNDERstatement- I literally had to stop from gorging since the portions are huge! The people were very friendly and the ambiance is charming! I can't wait to go back =)
