Residents Oppose Floyd Road Rezoning With Road Rallies

813CARe is organizing road rallies three days a week until a county rezoning hearing on Oct. 15.

The small red-and-white signs dotting the lawns of homes on Floyd Road near Dale Mabry Highway send the message loud and clear:

"Say NO to Carrollwood Rezoning!"

The message originates from grassroots organization 813CARe (Carrollwood Against Rezoning), comprised of local homeowners and residents opposed to the rezoning of commercial space by a Florida-based development company called Brightwork to build a Walmart and Wawa convenience store on the northwest corner of Floyd Road.

To demonstrate their opposition a few weeks before an Oct. 15 rezoning hearing on the project, the group has organized a road rally at the busy intersection from 7 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Road rallies will occur every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the rezoning hearing, according to officials at 813CARe.

Attendees are being asked to wear red to the rallies, according to an email from 813CARe.

That hearing was postponed to 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15 on the second floor of the county building, said Steve Valdez, county spokesman.

Local Voices blogger Leah Wooten chronicled the rezoning issue in blog posts.
