Locals React to Gus' Cafe Shutting its Doors

The Northdale restaurant was a favorite for the community

For years, it had been a Northdale staple.

But last month's closing of Gus' Cafe at 3871 Northdale Boulevard in the Northdale Shoppes plaza has locals occupying alternative eateries at lunchtime.

The local sentiment about the news is evident on the Gus' Cafe Facebook page, where regulars weighed in on the page's wall about the demise of the business at 3871 Northdale Boulevard.

Wrote Annette Nelson Hillring: "We are so saddened! Just went there for our usual Monday evening dinner and found Gus' closed. We sure hope you are able to re-open somewhere...we and all our family will come. We have been regulars since you first opened in Tampa. We miss you already!"

Melissa Tinkerbell-Fluttershy Mastrototaro agreed.

"Oh! So sad! We went there for lunch today after just having your amazing food for the first time 3 weeks ago.. we were devastated to find out you had closed.. please open a new location."

And Damien M. Rodriguez said, "Grew up in Northdale and loved this restaurant! Would drive up from South Tampa just to eat here. Was so disappointed when I arrived there last weekend and saw the closed sign. Best house dressing and tortellini ala pana."

Much like the late last year, we want to pose a question to readers:

Do you think another business should replace Gus' Cafe, or do you hope it re-opens?

I started working for Gus when I was 15 years old and fell in love with his food, him, Falcone, Luigi and the rest of the gang. I am 41 now and live in Palm Harbor and would still drive to Tampa for his food. You will be missed Mr. Priolla! Sincerely, Brent Golson a/k/a "Jumping"

We stopped by the restaurant after the Rays game today. It was sad to see the For Rent signs in the windows. We've been eating at Gus' since moving to Tampa in '99. Damien is right on with the tortellini ala pana. I have no idea how many Gus specials I have had. Gus' also had a fine hamburger and fries. My wife will miss the chicken soup and the marinara. We shipped Gus' sauce to relatives in California and Ohio. We still have dozens of empty sauce jars in the pantry. Gus, please reopen. Sincerely, Stan and Marilyn Pollock

Hey Brent, I started working for Gus at The Italian Pavilion in the University Square Mall when I was 15 too. I'm now 52 and owe so much to Gus for showing me how to run a business and also how to cook. He used to call me "Shambala." Does anyone know how Gus is doing? David Klasyk a/k/a/ "Shambala"

I'm also curious David. Is Gus retired or is he ill?? If memory serves me, this is the second time he has closed his Carrollwood location. Maybe its just for relocating. Retail rents are very low right now, it pays to take advantage of an expiring lease and move to new digs.

Gus's had the Best food, everything on the menu was amazing. We drove arcoss town for 13 years just to get one of our favorites dish baked shells and bring home a few extra jars of sauce and dressing since moving from the Northdale area. Was so shocked and disappointed to see that they had closed. ! Hope all is well and would love for them to reopen a store over here in Wesley Chapel, Fl
