Borders Bookstore in Carrollwood Closing

Location is one of two in Tampa to close

About 200 Borders bookstores will reach their final chapter at the end of April after the Ann-Arbor, Michigan based retailer filed for bankruptcy protection today.

The closures impact two stores in Tampa - including the Carrollwood location at 12500 N. Dale Mabry Highway and the store at 909 N. Dale Mabry Highway.

An exact date for final operations of the Carrollwood store is not yet available, said Donald Cutler, Borders corporate communications representative. That information will be posted online as soon as it becomes available, he said.

Cutler said that the store closures represent the economic hard times that the country has faced.

"The store closures are really a reflection of the economic conditions, cost structures and viability of the locations among a number of other aspects," he said.

Borders is not publicly discussing what will happen to the store's employees, Cutler said.

There is also uncertainty about what will happen to the building.

"As the process continues in the courts, more will be decided regarding the individual locations," said Cutler.

An inventory sale is planned, but Cutler didn't have specific dates or discount information pertaining to the Carrollwood store available.

"As the process for the wind down continues over the next several weeks, more information will be available regarding inventory type questions, and that will be available online."

Though Borders is reorganizing, the company remains optimistic about their future.

Said Cutler: "Through this reorganization, Borders will emerge as a vibrant retailer of books and other products, better able to address the needs of readers in Florida and throughout the nation."
