When a vehicle runs the light, a picture is taken of the license plate and the vehicle. Law enforcement officials review the tape to determine if the driver should be fined.
The fine is $158. Of that, $75 goes to the state's general revenue fund, $70 goes to Hillsborough County and the rest to the state insurance and spinal cord injury funds. So far, the county has caught thousands of drivers and netted over a million dollars in revenue from the camera system.
Don't think you ran the light? Ask for a court date and go before a judge. Then, the fine becomes a uniform traffic citation.
