Siblings Give Cancer the Kick

Siblings hope to raise $2,300 for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk

Firefighter and paramedic Chad Carver regularly volunteers for charities; however, this upcoming fundraising event is particularly important to him. His sister Patsy Dery wants to honor a friend’s mother who passed from breast cancer by walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer
Walk this October.

In order to do so, she needs to raise a minimum $2,300.

The siblings decided to do a kickball fundraising tournament.

“It’s a great way for friends and family to come together,” said Dery. “I played a couple of seasons ago and it was really a lot of fun. Right now (advertising) is just word of mouth. We don’t have any big sponsors and it is just an entry fee to play.”

The “Give Breast Cancer the Kick” kickball tournament currently has three confirmed co-ed teams, but still needs more.

Whether a group of coworkers, friends and family, or strangers wanting to band together to help a great cause, the event has room for seven more teams.

Registration is $20 per person and includes a meal.

“If a dozen people join together, the cost goes down to $180,” said Carver. “We need roughly 120 people. Each team consists of 10 people and needs a minimum of three females on it. It will be a double elimination tournament - two losses and you’re out.”

The tournament to be held on Sunday, June 10 at North Tampa Pony Baseball, the corner of Rome and Sligh Avenues, may, pending response, include a special kid-friendly tournament for any children wanting to participate.

Sign up will start at 10:30 a.m. and the game will begin at 11 a.m.

Friend and EMT Nick MacNeill has been assisting Carver and Dery to reach into the community to gather donations and raffle prizes including Tampa Yankee tickets, gift certificates for pizza, gas, and massage.

"I am helping out and participating in the tournament because this is a such good cause,” said MacNeill.

The trio are still in need of additional donations and raffle prizes.

“We chose kickball because my sister played and we have friends who play on a kickball league,” said Carver. “It’s a great way to have fun and raise money.”
