Ierna's Chili Cook-Off Promises to 'Bring the Heat'

Proceeds from the chili cook-off, which includes entertainment and a bounce house, will help a needy family

If you're a fan of chili and charity, a local business is offering an event you may want to mark on your calendar.

is hosting a "Bring the Heat" chili cook-off on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at their office, 18843 U.S. Highway 41 in Lutz. Proceeds will benefit a local family in need, who will receive a new heating and cooling system.

The winner receives a $500 prize from the judges, who include: Paula O'Neil, clerk and comptroller in Pasco County; Anthony Becht, an NFL player; Dave Andrechuck of the Tampa Bay Lightning; Jack Mariano, Pasco County commissioner; Dr. Dae Sheridan; Ron Oakley, candidate for Pasco County commissioner and Rich Elmhorst of Bay News 9.

The company came up with the idea of a chili cook-off after deciding not to recycle other popular fundraiser ideas, said Tripp.

"We wanted something unique," she said. "There's a lot of golf tournaments and clay shoots and events out there, but there aren't a lot of chili cook-off's in the area. Being a heating and cooling company, I love the idea of it being called 'Bring the Heat."'

The free event will also reward goodie bags to the first 300 adults who show up, said Tripp.

Maria Patterson, executive director of the Carrollwood Area Business Association, said CABA stands behind Ierna's doing something that could help a family in need.

"Anytime a business can share the wealth and care about people in the community, it shows strong character for that type of business," she said. "And, it's something fun to bring the community together."

If you know a family in need who could use a new heating and cooling system from the event's proceeds, call Loran Tripp at Ierna's at 813-948-6355.
