Ice Cream Fundraiser For Woman Battling Breast Cancer

Attend a fundraiser today from 4p.m.-8p.m. at Cold Stone Creamery in Carrollwood.

Enjoy some creamy cool goodness today, Dec. 4 at Cold Stone Creamery in Carrollwood while helping someone in need at the same time.

That is the goal behind a fundraiser being held at the store, located at 13168 N. Dale Mabry Highway.

Proceeds raised during the event will go to benefit Nancy Barlar, a Tampa resident battling stage 4 breast cancer.

Friend Chris Garrido planned the event.

Garrido and Barlar attended King High School together in the early 1990s and were working together on their 20th reunion when Nancy was diagnosed.

"After the reunion I thought, 'If we can put these man hours into something as trivial as a reunion, we certainly can organize some events to help Nancy'," Garrido said.

The result is the ice cream fundraiser event, which will be held from 4:00p.m.-8:00p.m. and include a silent auction and raffles. More than $2,500 worth of items have been donated.

Garrido said the fundraising event is being made possible by Cold Stone general manager Todd Byrne.

"He came to me with the idea when he heard about Nancy," Garrido said. "I didn't even have to ask."

Barlar is an educator who has taught music at Sulphur Springs Elementary, before becoming band director at Adams Middle School for 11 years.  She also worked as an adjunct professor for Florida College and St. Leo University.

"People use the term 'good person' very liberally," Garrido said. "Most people we know are 'good people', but there are some that rank near the top of that group. That's where Nancy sits"

"As a teacher and a devout Christian she has devoted her life to others, and when she beats cancer I know that she will be a tremendous advocate for all others who are suffering from this despicable disease," Garrido said.

The non-profit l2l3online.org will match up to $5,000 in money raised at the Cold Stone event.

For those who cannot attend, checks can be mailed to:
