The major ingredient in ice cream is air, and other lesser known facts.

With the temperatures soaring across the country, it's not a stretch that July is National Ice Cream Month.

For the entire month, the creamy coolness that is ice cream is to be celebrated with "appropriate ceremonies and activities," according to former President Ronald Reagan, who designated the month in 1984.

National Ice Cream Day actually falls on July 21.

Baskin Robbins is celebrating by offering offering guests a free freshly-baked waffle cone upgrade with the purchase of a double scoop of Baskin-Robbins ice cream through the end of August.

And if you're the type who likes to know a little history of their holidays, here's a few fun facts about ice cream according to International Dairy Foods Association and the National Ice Cream Retailers Association.

- It takes approximately 50 licks to finish off a scoop of ice cream.
- It is estimated that 90 percent of the nation's population likes ice cream, making it almost a universal crowd pleasing treat.
- The major ingredient in ice cream is air.
- Although ice cream is thought to have been invented in China, the U.S. is the top ice cream consuming country.
