Carrollwood Kicks Off Relay for Life

The event will be held this weekend at Gaither High School, 16200 N. Dale Mabry Highway

Karina Footman's dedication to Relay for Life began when she was in college.

Her grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian and uterine cancer, prompting Footman to get involved in the American Cancer Society's fundraiser.

Now, her grandmother is 80 years old and in remission. And Footman is continuing her dedication to Relay for Life after helping organize the Carrollwood leg of the event, which begins tonight.

"It's one of the most rewarding things I've done," said Footman.

In greater Tampa, Footman said, there are 16 events for Relay for Life, which is a team-based event that supports people who have battled cancer or have a loved one who has through a plethora of events that will include an overnight relay, food, games, a survivors lap around the school's track and a luminaria ceremony.

Carrollwood's Relay for Life will kick off with an opening ceremony at Gaither High School at 6 p.m. today, Footman said. All donations will go toward the American Cancer Society, Footman said.

"It's for the entire community," she said. "I think Carrollwood is such a great community. Last year, they raised $78,000 for the American Cancer Society to fund a variety of programs and services."

Lisa Demmi, who is also helping organize Relay for Life in Carrollwood, said local businesses like Great Clips and The Red Elephant have scheduled upcoming events that will provide donations to the fundraiser.

Demmi said she hopes people leave the event understanding one point:

"Cancer effects us all at some point," she said. "We'd like to stop that."
