CABA Preparing for Election Season

While political candidates stump across the country in preparation for upcoming national conventions in Tampa and Charlotte, N.C., local business owners in Carrollwood are vying for spots on the board of the Carrollwood Area Business Association.

"Serving on the CABA board of directors is a very prestigious honor," said Maria Patterson, executive director of the organization. "It's a very active role in getting service back to organizations and the community while exposing that person and their business."

This year, nine positions are open with the 305-member organization that is comprised of business owners in north Tampa. The positions are: treasurer, secretary, president elect and six board of directors positions.

To begin the process, CABA held informational meeting during the month of April to educate anyone who wanted to run about the election process, time frames and nomination forms.

Nominations occur from May 2 until June 27, at CABA events or meetings. A "Meet the Candidates Breakfast" will be held on June 13, so candidates should try to get their forms in soon so they can attend the breakfast, Patterson said.

At the CABA members-only breakfast, candidates are allowed to explain their platforms and why they're qualified to run, Patterson said.

Elections are held in July, and the new board is official on Aug. 1, Patterson said.

Noreen Klein, the current president of CABA, said the organization supports north Tampa businesses using its directory that is mailed to 5,000 local residents and businesses, and through its website, http://www.usecaba.com.

"Many members are long-standing members," she said. "They offer mentorship, guidance and even emotional support."
