Whole Foods Recalls Salmon
The grocery chain’s Florida stores are included in the fish recall, which was enacted because of a concern about possible Listeria contamination.
Can’t get enough salmon on your plate?
If you buy Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon from Whole Foods in Northdale, you might want to check the lot number. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that 4-ounce cold smoked and sliced salmon packages sold in 12 states, including Florida, are now under a recall because of possible Listeria contamination.
Listeria is an organism that can sometimes cause a “fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to a Whole Foods media release posted on the CDC website.
Symptoms of listeria infection include high fever, severe headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea. This organism can also cause miscarriage and stillbirths in pregnant women.
The recalled fish was sold in several states beyond Florida, including Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, according to the release.
How to Check Your Salmon
Here’s how to identify if your salmon purchase from Whole Foods is included in the recall:
- Packaging – The potentially contaminated fish was sold in a black-and-gold, flat, vacuum-sealed package. It is rectangular in shape.
- Lot Code – Look for the lot code on the packaging. The recalled fish was sold under the lot code of 7425A2298B. You’ll find the lot code ink-jet printed on the back of the package on the upper left side.
- UPC Code – The code on the impacted lot is 0 99482 40880 0.
Handling the Fish
Whole Foods recommends customers throw away fish from this particular lot and “wash their hands immediately to avoid any potential cross-contamination.”
The stores are offering full refunds. Anyone with questions can call 1-512-542-0060, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time.
