Domestic Exchange Occurred Before Village Inn Murder-Suicide

The murder-suicide took place at the Village Inn in Carrollwood.

UPDATE: The names of the two victims has been released by authorities at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. They are: Okariny Diaz, 33, of Tampa, and Guillermo Garcia, 38, of Pembroke Pines.

According to authorities, Garcia and Diaz were in the back parking lot of Village Inn exchanging custody of their 7-year-old son, whose age was originally given  by the Sheriff's Office as 8 and later corrected. The boy exited his dad's pickup truck after returning from a visit in south Florida and entered his mother's van that was occupied with two other adults, a 10-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls. The vehicles were parked side by side when Garcia got out of the truck, authorities said, and walked to the driver's side of the van Diaz was in. The two argued, and Garcia pulled out a revolver and shot Diaz multiple times, authorities said. Garcia then put the gun to his own head and killed himself, authorities said. No one else was injured in the shooting, authorities said.

Regina Jones was heading south on Dale Mabry Highway after a trip to a weight loss clinic when she spotted police tape.

Jones, 42, soon learned from bystanders who gathered this afternoon at the corner of Humphrey Street and Dale Mabry Highway that two people had been killed in the parking lot of Carrollwood's Village Inn restaurant, 3815 W. Humphrey St.

"I'm devastated," said Jones, whose father lives in Carrollwood. "This is unheard of in this area. My heart goes out to the family."

The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. when authorities received a call regarding shots fired in the parking lot of the restaurant, said Larry McKinnon, a spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

When they arrived, deputies found a man and a woman dead, McKinnon said. The two had met in the parking lot of Village Inn to exchange custody of an 8-year-old boy they had together, McKinnon said.

"An argument broke out, and he pulled a gun," McKinnon said. "He shot her multiple times, then shot himself."

One of the two people killed drove to Village Inn in a full-sized van that contained five adults and a 10-year-old girl, McKinnon said. The girl is not a child of the deceased man and woman, he said.

Names and ages of the two people killed have not been released yet, but will be later today, McKinnon said. It is unclear if the man and the woman were married.

Following the shooting, a crowd of people gathered in the parking lot of a KFC restaurant on the corner of Humphrey and Dale Mabry.

Among them was Terrance Jacobs, 37, who lives in Carrollwood and eats at Village Inn once a year.

"It's a shame," he said. "It's a real tragedy."

Meanwhile, Jones, who moved to Tampa four years ago, sympathized with the unidentified dead woman.

"She was shot in front of her kids," said Jones. "I have four kids, so I'm a parent.

"You just never hear anything like that happening out here."
