Tampa Comics, Musicians Organize Benefit for Aurora Shooting Victim
Comic Caleb Medley was critically injured in the Colorado shooting July 20.
When a gunman opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., July 20, comic Caleb Medley was critically injured.
Medley’s pregnant wife was unharmed and delivered their baby three days later.
Now, Tampa comics and musicians are coming together for “Let’s Laugh for Caleb,” a benefit for Medley Aug. 19 at the Lounge at Tampa Pitcher Show, 14416 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood. There will be a musical pre-show at 7:15 p.m., and then local comics will take the stage at 8 p.m.
“Comics stick together no matter where they are from,” said Temple Terrace resident Kathy McGuire, founder of Just Sang Productions and Glee Moms, who is hosting the event with Tampa Pitcher Show and comic David Frank. “They are their own brotherhood/sisterhood as they play the same clubs when they travel around the country. The degrees of separation between comics are probably no more than two.”
McGuire said she got her professional singing debut in a comedy club at 18.
“I understand that culture,” she explained.
The benefit will feature Frank and comics Michael Murillo, Johnny Bell, Johnny Oz and John J. Murray. There will also be pre-show entertainment by McGuire accompanied by pianist James Crumbly, and the comedic song stylings of Mike Handley.
“There may even be some more tunes after the show if you wanna hang out and party with the comics,” McGuire said.
Tickets are a $10 suggested donation, but larger donations will be accepted. There will also be raffle prizes.
“One hundred percent of the ticket and raffle money goes to Caleb and his family,” McGuire said. “We would love to get some local restaurant and retail raffle donations and will promote those patrons!”
