Gov. Mitt Romney details how much Medicare will be important to Sarasota County.

Updated 11:59 p.m.

Gov. Mitt Romney greeted a raucous crowd of supporters at a rally Thursday afternoon hoping to rebound from a week of controversy.

The Republican presidential candidate addressed the crowd at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the the shadows of the statue of David and the glistening Sarasota Bay.

"We're going to take back America," Romney said. "Keep America Strong!"

He continued that "this is a critical election you know that. This is about the soul of America."

Romney also focused on Medicare protection at the rally—a key issue for the many senior Floridians.

"I will save Medicare and protect it for our seniors for today and our seniors for tomorrow," Romney said.

Romney said Medicare investments means $1.4 billion alone to Sarasota County.

"We're going to put that $716 billion back in the Medicare, back into our system, back into the care of our seniors," Romney continued.

The Obama campaign released a statement Thursday criticizing Romney's health care plan.

"He hasn’t offered many details about his plans to turn Medicare into a voucher system, but we do know is frightening. Instead of their guaranteed benefits, seniors would be left with a voucher," the Obama campaign wrote. "But the voucher wouldn’t grow fast enough to keep up with the costs of health care, so seniors would find themselves paying thousands of dollars more every year – all while insurance companies made as much as $16 to $26 billion in new profits."

Romney highlighted his five objectives as well:

  • Take advantage of coal, natural gas, nuclear power and oil in the U.S.
  • Expand trade and punish China's trade tactics
  • Improve education and lessen effects of teacher unions; federal dollars to be attached to child that can be transferred to the school of his or her parents' choice
  • Decrease deficit, cap spending for balanced budget so "we will not be Greece at some point."
  • Champion small business

"The president's plan for a million small businesses is to raise taxes, to take it from 35 percent to 40 percent—that's the federal income tax—I will not let that happen because jobs are my priority," Romney said.

Romney is on the defensive this week after a video leaked Monday where he told a crowd in Boca Raton earlier this year that 47 percent of the country would vote for the president anyway as those folks are "dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims."

The Mother Jones story spread through the media and politicians on both sides of the aisle criticized Romney for his comments, and Romney himself admitted that his remarks were "inelegant."

Romney had his own protesters here in Sarasota saying that "I love protesters" and hoped he had some time to talk to them about wanting change.

"We're going to take back this country and get it back on track to greatness again," Romney said.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi spoke at the rally trying to criticize Obama's universal healthcare plan while boosting support for Romney.

"Mitt is the most honest, ethical man I know," Bondi said. "And he is going to make a wonderful president of the United States of America."

Romney is expected to wrap up the event at 5 p.m., and is scheduled to visit West Palm Beach for a fundraiser while his campaign will continue in Miami, and Gainesville this week, with Paul Ryan in Orlando, for campaign events.

Crowds and volunteers started filing in around 11 a.m. for the event then found the tight security procedures starting when around noon security blocked off a perimeter near the event area to set up mobile airport-like security checkpoints.

Medics and volunteers were busy handing out water to the thousands who attended, and at least two people were treated for heat-related illnesses.

Meanwhile, it was business as normal at Ringling Museum as visitors filed through Treviso restaurant, the Banyan Cafe and the various museums on the campus.

The Ringling Museum's spokesman Scott Gardiner told Patch the campaign event was OK within the museum's and Florida State University policies.

"As with any organization, special events require modification to our standard conditions. As an example, the recent Jackie Evancho “Dream with Me” filming, produced for PBS in April of 2010, did not fit within the standard conditions and a special rental agreement was created," Gardiner told Patch.

"Ringling is not hosting or sponsoring the Mitt Romney event," Gardiner continued. "The Ringling Museum is being rented through a business transaction at fair market value."

The rental policy posted on the museum's website is for after-hours events and used for common events such as weddings and rentals and specifiies no revenue-generating or political events could be hosted at the museum.

Wow, now Romney is turning around and against his own words when he agreed with Ryan about taking down Medicare. Romney now wants to help the 47% of the people he said he didn't care about. You can not believe his man at all. He will do anything and say anything to get your vote. Watch out he will change horses in the middle of the stream again once in office. IF, that would happen, and I think it will not. But, it scares me that a man like Romney will lie and say anything to the voter to get votes. I just do not trust this man at all. He has a Congress that is waiting on him to get into office so they can do away with Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, business having to provide a pension for its worker, etc. you name it. Anything that benefits the middle class and the poor will no longer be available. Only the Rich Business man will prosper. One percent of the Richest in this country already have more money than the bottom 90%. There is no middle class any more. A rich man only wants more, and that is what Romney is going to provide. Don't let him fool you. He is all lies and will do anything to get elected.

It's really sad to see a nice young lady like Pam fall for that old line, "Of course, I'll respect you in the morning." Pssst, Pam. He doesn't even respect you now.

Any person over 55 that votes for Romney is just a damn ignorant fool. Republicans always cut spending. Medicare and SS are going to get hit the hardest under Romney . Military spending will get a big increase because republicans like to drop bombs on other countries. Pam Bondi is a joke : a Rick Scott puppet.

I think more so, they like the big-buck windfalls they and their cronies' corporations make from dropping bombs on people in other countries. make no mistake, Romney's intentions are purely self-serving and he has no clue what the people of this country really need, nor does he care. No clue what it's like being a member of the majority of people that struggle to survive on a daily basis. He isn't any different than any other Republican candidate we have seen over the last several elections, except perhaps even more the lying idiot than Bush. Junior. In fact, I would have to say that with every election the republican candidates grow in arrogance, utter lack of accountability, and blatant deceitful, self-serving.

How dumb they think the People are. They have zero respect for the People. ZERO.

So government can't create jobs but when we increase defense spending it will create jobs. When we When we keep the Bush tax cuts for the upper 1% they will create jobs even though they didn't do it under Bush, but we're going to cut their taxes even more so it's sure to work this time unless they ship the bucks to the Cayman Islands or Switzerland. All of this will be paid for by closing tax loopholes but we won't be told which ones until after the election. That's understandable because if told that mortgage interest, healthcare premium deductibility etc are out you might figure that your taxes going up while the upper 2% are coming way down. Damn right there's class warfare and the upper class is the one waging it and winning. By all the polls it looks like the American people are figuring out that Romney is not their guy.

CS, good research on the posted rental policy of the Ringling property not allowing political events. It did seem as if they were sponsoring Gov. Romney. I think the Ringling property needs to update their policy. These days venues need to generate as much revenue as they can; however, by hosting a political event, a museum such as Ringling puts its reputation on the line, too. It is also controversial for public schools to host political events during campaign season even though in many communities those schools are the only venues with space. How tough it must be to be the staff arranging all these "rallies"! Again, thanks for adding an interesting point to the article.

Thanks Lynda! It was an interesting site as we did notice some friction between the rally volunteers and the Ringling staff. One Patch editor witnessed a volunteer insisting she needed one of the golf carts to drive someone for the event, but the Ringling employee informed her that only Ringling staff are authorized to drive those carts.

Romney-Ryan are a TOTAL joke. Anyone who votes for them, deserves to have their Medicare checks disappear in 2016, as official predict the fund will go broke under their leadership.

Romney-Ryan want to lead 53 percent of the American public, not 100 percent -- like Obama-Biden.

Joseph Robert-- This country cannot afford another four years under Obama and Biden (the human gaffe' machine).

Do you like 43 months (and counting) of unemployment over 8% with more Americans out of work than when Obama took office?

When is there going to be the Romney vs. Ryan debate on health care issues? That ought to be a good one, given that there is no agreement between the two.
