Obama vs. Romney: Local Political Influencers Weigh In on 3rd Debate

Patch surveyed 132 local political influencers immediately following the third presidential debate.

While political pundits duke it out over who won the third and final presidential debate, Patch decided to take a different route.

Instead of relying on professional analysts to tell us whether President Barack Obama or former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney took home the win, we turned to our readers.

We surveyed 132 influential conservatives and liberals right after the debate and asked them their thoughts on the biggest moments of the Oct. 22 showdown between Obama and Romney.

One Republican who thought Romney won by a wide margin wrote, “Barack says he has kept us safe for the last 4 year … explain that to the families of victims of Fast & Furious and the terrorists attack on Benghazi.”

A Democrat who thought Obama won by a wide margin said one particular moment would stand out in the minds of Florida’s swing voters: “(The) President’s recalling of his visit to Israel as a candidate; not a fundraiser like Romney.”

Another Democrat who thought Obama won had this to say: “I like this Romney on foreign policy better than the one of the last five year, but which one would we get?”

Saying Obama won by a slim margin, a Republican respondent wrote this: “Obama again came across as the serious aggressor and at times too aggressive. There was a certain lack of civility on President Obama’s part that may offend Florida voters.”

A Democrat respondent had a different take. “The looks on Romney’s face while Obama spoke, he looked thwarted.”

One Republican offered advice for voters, no matter their party. “It’s time for the American voter to make their decision and do the research needed to make an informed vote.”

Tonight’s debate was the last one prior to the Nov. 6 general election.

Who do you think won the Oct. 22 debate? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

The "Red Tampa Bay" and “Blue Tampa Bay” Survey

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican activists, party leaders and elected officials in Tampa Bay. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted Oct. 22 between 10:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. Oct. 23. Patch will be conducting Red Tampa Bay and Blue Tampa Bay surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Tampa Bay. It does seem that sheriff Nocco likes to see his pic in the papers any chance he can . Some people think this is the case just untill the election is over ? Iam not sure about that ? What I do know is unlike sheriff White , sheriff Nocco seems to be very interested in arresting the prescription drug dealers and has done well in my opinion with this. The only problem I have as we speak with sheriff Nocco is that he is a republican . The republicans have fought against a prescription drug database for years . Sen Fasano another rep, under pressure from many people , fought for a database and got a watered down version passed. However its not mandatory for the doctors to use it . They say only 2% of doctors are using it ??? This is the only way the reps would pass this law and refused to let the tax payers fund it . I believe this was an effort to see it go away . Why are the reps protecting the doctors ? President Obama said a few years ago he would work on a national drug database that would be mandatory for the doctors to use . Why would the reps not do the same in Florida? Why are the drug companies being protected along with the doctors ? A mandatory database is a no brainer that would take many prescription drugs off our streets . Pasco county is the worst of 67 counties for this abuse.

We watched the men of iraq moving truck loads of WHO KNOWS WHAT for over 4 months before the republicans invaded this country. Then George Bush said duh !!!!!!!! No WMDs ?????? The news networks reported this everyday , even Fox News . The republicans went in for the oil , and American companies are pumping this oil today . Do we really want to vote in the republican war machines in again ? Sadamm got hung in less than a year . Yes the Iraqi men hung him at our direction . How many republican children are going overseas dying or comming back missing parts? Drugs comming into our backyards are killing our kids daily and we look the other way at alot of it . Put our resourses to work on the border and worry about the other side of the world when we clean up our own backyards. Please vote Obama thank you

there is nothing to even weigh in on, its obvious romney doesnt know anything about these issues and actually parroted back Obama's actions .. and how he would carry them on and on and on.......... the only thing i can say is finally someone on his staff said, listen up. and do this. word for word. he didnt know answers so shifted it to getting rid of medical etc. he doesnt know a thing. i would hope anyone who is republican would want someone with experience not someone who hasnt any. he could be an advisor on business issues however that office doesnt do that. For a business person he doesn’t come with a wide range of being able to extend into all areas.

What Debate did you Liberals watch?

The one I saw definitely had Obama on top for the first 30 minutes - The last HOUR was purely THE MITT ROMNEY SHOW. In the end Romney looked like the incumbent, and Obama the challenger.

Think Obama didn't notice? He's now started a "GARAGE SALE FOR OBAMA" to collect even MORE of what he hasn't taken from you YET!

I loved the comment from Gov. Romney that Syria is Iran's way to the sea! Such a wonderful grasp of geography he has. (Iran doesn't border Syria and Iran has sea coasts on both north and south.) Well, another low information president for low information voters. How much worse can he be than Bush II? Answer: much worse.

These are serious times and we need serious people who are transparent to tackle real problems, not just slap band aids on bullet wounds or use personal ideology to dismantle our country. I'm all for paying the least amount of taxes I can, but American people want certain things and American people are not afraid to pay for it! Our country is seriously under staffed and running by the seat of it's pants. We have reached a tipping point, a slope that will cost residents and business owners trillions to recover from if left unchecked and unchanged. I was born here and I will die here but I wont let a handful of people destroy what took generations of families to build together! I'm a Republican and I'm voting for President Obama!

Mitt Romney was told by his advisors exactly what to say at the debate, but it was obvious last night how little knowlege of foreign policy that he actually has. Mitt Romney has no real foreign policy experience and it showed during the one overseas trip that he took during this campaign. Romney went to England during the Olympics and he managed to insult the entire nation by questioning whether England was prepared to hold the Olympics. British newspapers had a field day calling him "Mitt the Twit". Then Mitt went to Israel with Casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson. He embarrassed himself again by insulting the Palestinian people. Romney also showed a total misunderstanding of the Palestian Problem when he spoke before his millionaire donors. Mitt Romney will certainly embarrass the U.S. greatly if he is elected president. He is simply not ready for prime time.

Romney is either a magician, multi personality or a liar as he gone from well beyond the tea party right to a white Obama.
And do not forget he is a vulture capitalist, Romney who attacked healthy companies and well as those in trouble and so called helped them running up there debt and then legally stealing millions in fees and forcing many into bankruptcy. And who pays for the bankruptcy’s? ultimately you and I.
So I cannot vote for anyone who kills company’s and harms people lives for no other reason then money, which is very similar to a thief.

I can see you are like Fox News with the 24/7 news of Benghazi. I actually had to stop watching as I wanted to hear current news. While it was very tragic, the attack on 9/11 was much more tragic. Did you know Bush was warned in the spring and again in the summer that an attack was imminent? Probably not as I am sure Fox never covered that. Actually back then we all rallied around Bush despite the fact his lack off leadership led to the attack. As we should have, as we needed to show the world we were the UNITED States of America as we stood up to terrorists. We even reelected him after he had brought us into a war under the false pretenses of WMDS. What I find really sad is how all the conservatives keep crucifying our President for Benghazi. What happened to being United?? Oh wait, thats right, conservatives dont want to be united as if they did then that would open the door to the president being elected again God forbid. After all he has done nothing good for us.. I guess killing Osama and killing or capturing the other 20 something TOP terrorists is nothing. As for your links. The President receives his briefings electronically and considering all the terrorists he has captured and all the attacks that have been thwarted, I will not be upset if one was not handled appropriately, maybe because I realize we are all children of God and no one is perfect. Also because I know we have been much safer under Obama and I can sleep well at night.

Fox News picks and chooses their battles and refuse to discuss the real problems that the republicans have. The republicans are supporting BIG pharma and the doctors . Lets stop the bs . Contrary to your statement, it is a Romney administration that will lead America to destruction. Pres. Obama has brought the country forward out of the Great Bush Recession that was caused by Bush's lack of regulations on Wall Street speculation. In addition, Republicans started two unfunded wars in Iraq and Afganistan while giving tax breaks to millionaires. This is what has caused the majority of our current budget deficit. Pres. Obama has done a great job saving the automotive industry that Mitt Romney wanted to go bankrupt. In contrast, Mitt Romney spent his time as a vulture capitalist closing down factories and sending American jobs to China. The only destruction that I am worried about is the destruction of the middle class that will be caused if Mitt Romney is elected president.

What I find most sad is the nasty name calling, and the disrespect for our President. Whether you are liberal on conservative, why do people have to do this??? What ever happened to the days when we would rally behind our president as we did when Bush screwed up as he was warned twice about an imminent attack before 9/11. Back then we stood UNITED to show how strong we were and how we stood behind our president no matter what. Those of you who resort to name calling and constantly harping on Benghazi should be ashamed of yourselves. Don't you think the terrorists are eating this up as it only shows them how divided we are and that makes us weaker?? Time to wake up people. The president is not the problem, its the strong divide along party lines that will be the undoing of this country no matter who is President. I have voted for both republicans and democrats and do not vote party lines, but instead who I feel is best for the job. I have lived under Gov Romney and Pres Obama, so unlike most of you I have a better idea what each has brought to the table. I have provided a link on the governors accomplishments above in hopes you would take the time to read about his real record. People need to research completely and not be listening to highly paid political ads that are not true, articles written but people who clearly have an agenda or youtube videos anyone can make. This election is too important. WAKE UP PEOPLE before its too late for all of us.

It is awful, but you have a Republican party that has found more success than they could have ever imagined though pushing fear, paranoia and objectification. And I am not just talking about this election. I was writing about the rhetoric of fear and its use during George H W Bush's run for a second term back 20 years ago. I recently went back to that paper and where I had to flush out subtexts, etc., because it was mainly through coded terms and micro targeting audiences, now it is just one blunt swing of the hammer after the other. I am personally shocked at how many people respond to this type of campaigning, but obviously it works. Just look at how many people are backing Romney. The guy hasn't had a consistant position on any major issue, so people can't be backing him on issues. They back him simply because they have bought into the "fear" of the "other."

No problem Brian.. I drank koolaid in Mass and believed Romney and I did not bother to research and check anything, So I can fully understand where you are coming from. It is so much easier to just believe and have blind trust and then put blinders on afterwards instead of realizing you made a mistake. It takes a bigger person to admit when they were wrong and it is so much easier to continue down the path of ignorance. For me however, I admit I was wrong in Mass and because of that i will continue to research everything I read and hear to know if its truth or more BS.. Once I learned of the inauguration night meeting from actually a republican, and how they had this planned from day one to make sure that the president didnt get reelected, I realize the people at this meeting truly did not have our best interests at heart. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/robert-draper-anti-obama-campaign_n_1452899.html Ironically Paul Ryan was there!! No I applaud Paul Draper and also Colin Powell who just endorsed Pres Obama as they realize, its more important to do what is right this time instead of just blindly voting your party. Just too bad others were not like these people.
