Obama’s Tampa Rally: What You Need to Know

As President Barack Obama makes his way to Tampa for an Oct. 25 rally, organizers and law enforcement have some advice to pass along to Bay area residents.

Whether you’re making your way to Ybor City’s Centennial Park to hear President Barack Obama speak Oct. 25 or you just need to drive through the area, there are some things you need to know.

Getting into the 1800 E. 8th Ave. park is going to require not only a ticket, but also a pass through security screening, said Lacey Rose, a spokeswoman for the Obama campaign.

“It’s kind of like airport security,” she said.

With that in mind, she cautioned those who plan on going should leave things like umbrellas, backpacks, large bags and drinks at home.

“We will be handing out water outside to the people in the lines and we’ll have water inside, as well,” Rose said. “They do search everything you do bring in.”

Here’s what else you need to know:

The Rally Schedule

  • 7 a.m. Doors open for people with tickets
  • 9 a.m. This is the estimated time for Obama to make an appearance

Traffic Concerns

Law enforcement is not releasing a list of what roads will be closed, but Detective Larry McKinnon of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office did offer some advice for those traveling through Ybor City or South Tampa on Thursday morning.

“Like always, you can expect traffic delays and road closures,” McKinnon said.

Bay area residents who need to be downtown or in Ybor at certain times Thursday morning should leave early.

Free tickets for the Tampa rally are still available at some Obama For America Florida offices. Here is the list of locations that still had tickets as of 10 a.m. Oct. 24:

We've had some readers asking about specific parking information for the rally. I'm trying to track down some information now and will post a separate story on parking as soon as I can.

Secrets Guru, your comments are uncalled for and are clearly an example of a individual who represents no party but only yourself. I and other will continue to ask you to leave until you exit the area. Your comments are offensive to all and I hope you get the help you need!

Actually the help needed is for America to wake up to the real dangers that are directly ahead under the rule of Islamic Sharia Law! If you would take the time to educate yourself by watching the gripping video at theBBCReport.com it would put you into a cold sweat when you realize how this religion terrorizes the world and is already HERE IN AMERICA! Obama is a very strong supporter of Islam which has at its foundation, Sharia Law! There are a ton of facts to support this at theBBCReport.com! Its not about political a party. I wouldn't care if it was Republicans, Democrats or Independents promoting Islam but would fight for our freedom! Forget the bias and check out the video. You will be glad you did!

Secrets Guru also believes in the tooth fairy, and feels that Alice in Wonderland was a documentary that can teach us about guerrilla warfare and the law of the Cheshire Cat.

It's sad to see someone so divorced from reality, and I also hope that he gets the medical help he clearly needs.

Is there anything specific that we need to have in order to get the tickets? i.e. a driver's licence perhaps? I just want to go prepared..

All people who care about women's rights, health care, protecting Medicare and Social Security, the separation of church and state, keeping regulations on Wall Street greed, having consumer protections, and don't want more tax cuts for the rich, should attend the Obama rally in Tampa. Our country needs to move forward with a strong middle class and not backwards by electing rich plutocrats like Romney who will decimate the middle class and leave us to fight over the crumbs that they will be leaving the rest of us.

Since Pres. Obama won the last 2 debates, I have begun to see more Obama/Biden signs and the excitement is back in the air. Pres. Obama's rallies have been really funny and exciting lately. When Pres. Obama talks about Mitt suffering from a case of "Romnesia", and how it can be cured by Obamacare, it really brings down the house. I can now see the momentum shifting back to Pres. Obama. Let's try to show up for this rally and then vote to make sure that Pres. Obama wins the state of Florida.

I picked up a ticket earlier and I wanted two so my wife could go too but no joy. Want to know why? I had to show photo id. I don't understand why. Florida does require a photo id to vote, but not all states do. Do people getting tickets in other states (those without an id requirement) have to show id too? I think this stinks.

TJG, I laugh when Republicans like you try to blame the economic problems of the last 4 years on Pres. Obama. It was Pres. Bush who left this country in a mess by starting two wars that he never paid for and then gave tax cuts to millionaires. It was Bush who cut regulations on Wall Street and allowed excessive speculation and the writing of bad mortgages that ruined our economy. I hope you know that in Florida we have had only Republican governors for the last 14 years and both the Senate and the House of Representatives have been under Republican control since 1996. Somehow Republicans now try to blame all of Florida's economic problems solely on Pres. Obama when it was their own short sighted policies that caused our economic problems. It was Republican policies that underfunded education, that failed to properly diversify Florida's economy beyond tourism and construction, that kept us as a low wage sevice economy, all the while enriching themselves in Tallahassee and focusing on building bad projects like the Taj Mahal Courthouse instead of helping out the people.

Two of the most important points from Obama's speech this morning:

"...I don't think any politician in Washington, most of whom are male, should be making healthcare decisions for women..."

and

“When you elect a president, you’re counting on someone you can trust to fight for you, who you can trust to do what they say they’re going to do, who you can trust to make sure that when something unexpected happens he or she is going to be thinking about your family, your future...Trust matters!”

The Quote of the Decade:
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, "the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
~ Senator Barack H. Obama, March 2006

(it was so nice of him to give us this great quote for posterity!)

Yes it was. And many of the results of the"W" Bush years were just beginning to manifest themselves in 2006 and did not really hit until 2007-2008. The Congress allowed TWO UNfunded (and undeclared) WARS, one of which which still continues because this president went along with the Republicans (mostly) in the House and the US Generals who wanted to stay. I do not recall any such madness toward FDR after the sneak attack on Pearl harbor where we lost thousands or toward "W" & Cheney after 9/11 (even though they were forewarned) where we also lost thousands. But the Republicans are going nuts over the sneak attack in Libya that cost us 4 men. At age 73 I have never seen so much lying as I have from the Right in this campaign. The Debt level they keep attacking was created by these TWO Wars and Wall Street. Obama is trying to deal with that mess. $750 BILLION went to Wall Streets bailout and $750 BILLION went to our bailout. The former is OK with the Republicans, many millions of which went to the problem creators as bonuses, while the latter saved tens of thousands of critical (teachers, police and firemen) jobs, but this is BAD to the Republicans. WHY?? They are backward. This story goes on and on and much of American does not seem to remember just 6-8 years ago. And the press is just REACTINg vice investigating before they speak. I hope we do not pay for America's lack of memory.

I'm with you Richard. I believe a lot of people are so terribly gullible about this economy thing because as the economy was circling the bowl at the end of 2008, it was actually SO BAD that the "pundits" didn't even want to talk about it...it was that scary and just a little exageration or irresponsibility from the press and everything would have become hysterical. I believe history will show that Barack Obama is a great man, the likes of which you get maybe once in a generation. The American people were right in 2008, and they should be proud of that choice and reelect him for a second term.
We have been lucky to have him in the office, and I am going out and working my BUTT off this week because I want him rehired!
