Local Business Owner Capitalizes on Creativity at Web Design Company
Skrub Creative Services in Carrollwood helps customers with tight budgets achieve their goals
He knows the first word of his business is spelled incorrectly. But, Sean Nielsen doesn't mind.
Nielsen, 35, used the first initial in his first name and the "K" in his middle name to jumpstart Skrub Creative Services at 3450 Palencia Drive in 2009.
Patch talked to the Marion, Iowa native about how what his Carrollwood business does and how he's accomplishing his goals.
What do you do at Skrub Creative?
Our main focus is making your web presence work for you, so we focus on custom, budget-minded web design & development. This includes developing custom designed websites, search engine optimization strategies, existing site maintenance and add-ons, programming & development, site redevelopment and hosting.
What are the goals that you have for your business?
Skrub Creative wants excited and passionate fans about the work we do. We're establishing a niche working with small businesses in north Tampa and the larger Tampa Bay Area, so we'd like to continue to develop new strategies to make it easier for small businesses to work with us. We're a pretty flexible company with a lot of reach. We work with all different types of enterprises, but we're a small business, and we're sensitive to the goals and challenges they face.
What obstacles have you encountered while running your business?
People whom I've worked with know that I frequently work late hours. So I think the biggest (thing) is time management. You get so busy dealing with parts of the work that seem like minutiae, but are pretty important. Coming from the creative end of things, personally, it's been a big challenge to keep on top of details. Mainly when you just want to create great work, but you know what they say about the details.
What do you offer that other similar businesses don't?
We offer custom solutions. Our design work in particular is built to a customer's goals, needs and budget. Also, we deliver personalized attention, and listen to what our customers want. I encounter many customers who've had bad experiences with designers and developers because they don't listen to what the customers what. Those are typically my best customers and the ones with whom I develop continued relationships. We have a very high customer retention rate, so I think that speaks for itself.
Was opening Skrub Creative a dream or a vision of yours? How fulfilling has it been?
Honestly, I never imagined that I'd be doing this on my own. I came from a graphic arts and art history background, so I always hoped I'd be doing something creative. Now, the idea of what "creative" means differs from project to project, but I love finding solutions, just on a personal level. Those "A-ha" moments make it worthwhile.
