As Carrollwood residents carve into their turkeys and enjoy their pies, most government workers in the area will also enjoy a break from the workaday world.
Hillsborough County has announced it is closing most of its offices and facilities for two days (Nov. 22-23) to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.
The closings apply to the county’s administrative offices, libraries, Head Start centers, recreation centers, senior centers and nutrition centers. Some regional parks will be open on Thanksgiving Day.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s closed and open:
All solid waste collection services will shut down on Thursday, Nov. 22, but will resume as normal on Nov. 23. This schedule covers unincorporated Hillsborough County, including Hunter’s Green, Tampa Palms and the area of New Tampa serviced by county garbage services.
The county’s landfills, transfer stations, the Resource Recovery Facility and community collection centers will also close Thanksgiving Day. They’ll operate on a normal schedule Friday, Nov. 23.
This agency will close down Thanksgiving Day and Friday. Some emergency workers will remain on site and can be contacted at 813-744-5660. The shelter reopens Nov. 24.
Emergency services will operate, but the administrative offices will close Nov. 22-23. This includes the Fire Marshall’s Office and Emergency Management.
Head Start, Schools, YMCAs
The county’s Head Start facilities will close down both days. So will Tampa Metropolitan YMCA branches and Lutheran Services of Florida branches.
The County’s InfoLine
The InfoLine at 813-272-5900 will not be staffed Thursday or Friday.
All county libraries will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 except the Temple Terrace Public Library. That facility closes at 8 p.m. The libraries will remain closed through Friday.
The county’s recreation centers and skate parks are closed Thursday and Friday.
A few regional parks will be open on Thanksgiving Day, including:
- Alderman’s Ford
- Edward Medard
- Morris Bridge and Trout Creek sections of Wilderness Park
These regional parks are closed on Thursday: E.G. Simmons, Eureka Springs, Lake Park, Lake Rogers, Lettuce Lake, Lithia Springs, Upper Tampa Bay, and the Dead River, Harney Boat Ramp, John B. Sargeant and Veteran’s Memorial sections of Wilderness Park. The Upper Tampa Bay Trail also is closed on Thanksgiving Day.
This transportation service is closed both Thanksgiving Day and Friday.
The county’s Public Utilities Department will close its call center and water and wastewater customer service centers on Thursday and Friday.

The county’s constitutional offices, including the Property Appraiser and Tax Collector, are closed Thursday and Friday. So are all court facilities and the Clerk of the Circuit Court office.
