It was a phone call that Maria Patterson, executive director of the Carrollwood Area Business Association (CABA), did not expect to get.
John Baumann, beloved founder and past president of CABA, died on Tuesday due to complications related to surgery. He was 67.
In 1986, John formed CABA to give Carrollwood businesses a networking opportunity and a voice in local affairs. He began CABA in his Carrollwood office with just a few businesses. Now, 25 years later, 330 Carrollwood member businesses have benefited from his vision.
“John was an amazing man – a true entrepreneur,” said Maria, “He was generous and kind, and our members would flock to him for advice. He was always willing to help. He was the first to donate or sponsor our events and he participated every single year.”
Baumann, a CPA at Baumann, Raymondo & Co, CPAs and Dimensions Wealth Partners was known for his great values and high integrity.
“John shared his vision with everybody. He was just so forthcoming giving out his knowledge and wisdom, trying to help people in business,” said Patterson. “He really wanted to see people succeed, and he was always willing to help them to do that.”
Noreen Klein, 25-year member and current CABA president, agreed. “John was a mentor, colleague and a dear friend. Everyone loved him – not liked - loved. You will not find a person who had an unkind word about John. He was a true gentleman.”
Klein said that his legacy will not only be CABA, but his lifelong philosophy that “in giving, you receive.”
A devoted family man, Baumann is survived by his wife, Gail, two sons, Paul and Marc, and a daughter, Jennifer.
“There is a huge void in CABA and in the business community, but I’m sure John is helping God open up a couple of businesses. He’s taken over the miracle department and is mentoring the angels,” said Klein. “He always had great ideas.”
Baumann’s wake will be held on Monday, Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 3207 West Bearss Avenue.
His funeral is Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 12708 North Dale Mabry Highway.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to his charity: Sertoma Inc. – Annual Fund, 1912 E. Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64132.
